Why support
Frontier?
Frontier, founded by Samar Sen, began its journey in April 1968. It was an effort that was born out of a period of great political upheavals — in West Bengal, India, and even in different parts of the world. Driven by the demand for change and the rising political awareness in all strata of the society — be it students, workers, peasants, or the middle-class — Frontier endeavored to represent the people’s voice in these turbulent times. Frontier continued to be edited by Samar Sen till his death in August 1987, a responsibility which has since then been taken over by Timir Basu. For over fifty years, Frontier has been constant in its stance as a ‘pro-people’ publication.
From its genesis till today, Frontier has tried to stay true to its pledge to oversee the progress of those events with an open eye. It has given space to incisive analyses of the social and political events of the time — contributed by eminent academicians, activists, social workers, students, teachers, legislators, business executives, and conscious civilians: in short, all who are interested in critical as well as informed views of society, home and abroad, free from the compulsion of any vested interest. It has carried this tradition forward every week for the past fifty-five years.
As a pro-people journal, the economic subsistence of the weekly depends mainly on its subscribers, associates, and life members. In recent times, with growing inflation, the publication cost of Frontier has been rising rapidly, to the point that its weekly publication—unbroken for 55 years—now stands threatened. The readers, subscribers, and well-wishers of Frontier, who wish for this weekly to continue its journey, are requested to come forward and become life subscribers, or contribute otherwise in any way possible.
A readers’ meet was organized on September 2, 2023, to discuss the current state of Frontier and to bring forward suggestions for its sustenance from its readers. Several important suggestions emerged from the meeting, which will hopefully bring the weekly to a better future. This can only come into fruition when Frontier as a platform will be able to find economic stability with the support of its well-wishers and subscribers. We request the readers and friends to stand by Frontier in any way possible, and to drive forward this weekly in its journey ahead. We welcome submissions from aspiring writers interested in contemplating on matters of social relevance, and carrying forward the spirit of Frontier.
